Health Trainers

Level 2 Health Trainers

We paid for 25 of our volunteers to go on a course to be accredited as “Health Trainers”. Those that complete the 4 day course and pass a test will get a Level 2 Award in “Understanding Health Improvement” from the Royal Institute of Public Health.

This will assist us in the training of our volunteers who work at our diabetes information desks and diabetes awareness stands at road shows.

The basic topics cover:

  • What does health mean
  • the basic concepts of health
  • the NHS
  • self care management
  • food and nutrition
  • physical activity
  • sexual health
  • smoking cessation
  • drugs & alcohol

It also covers
- ways of identifying lifestyle changes,
- how to influence people to change their behaviour, and
- handling confidential information.

The course is run by the Local Authority Public Health Team and is based in the Civic Centre.

To date 23 of our members have qualified and have been given an honorary contract with NHS Hounslow.

Level 3 National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Health Training

Some of our Level 2 Health Trainers have gone on to complete a Level 3 Award.
Those that complete the Level 3 Course, which comprises 14 days training in-house, and a home course over 5 months, and pass the written assessments will get a Level 3 National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Health Training from the Royal Institute of Public Health.
This will accredit those level 3 Health Trainers to do 1:1 sessions with the general public under an honorary contract from NHS Hounslow.

Accreditation of some of our volunteers to do blood testing, blood pressure testing; height, weight and body mass index (BMI) measuring in order to screen the public for increased risk to diabetes.

We have an agreement with NHS Hounslow for some of our “Level 2 Health Trainers” to be further accredited to perform blood pressure testing, and weight, height & BMIs measuring, and licensed to do so under their honorary contract with NHS Hounslow. Some of our Health Trainers have also been accredited to do blood testing on a Collescheck machine provided they are supervised by a nurse.
