Hounslow Voluntary Group - Volunteer Training Manual
We have written a comprehensive volunteer training manual for our volunteers to use when attending diabetes information desks or manning diabetes awareness stands at roadshows.
It lists:-

• what we want to achieve from operating a diabetes information desk
• how to set up a desk
• layout and types of posters
• procedures at a diabetes desk
• questions to ask visitors at the desk
• information & booklets to give you
• guidance notes for volunteers on what they can do or say
• how to provide information and support to people living with diabetes
• information about the Diabetes UK Charity
• information about Diabetes UK Hounslow Voluntary Group
• information on Diabetes UK booklets & leaflets and what key messages they contai
• information on Diabetes UK books for sales

It intended to train volunteers to ensure that whenever a member of the public attends one of our desks or stands, no matter where it is, no matter who they speak to, that they will go away with the same key messages and items of literature.

External Training Courses attended:-

Social Marketing Event, 23rd March 2010
Colin Stacey went to this event run by Fosters at the Marriott Hotel in Guildford. This was to promote awareness and presentation of the Group to Businesses & the General Public. How to invite people of all ages, genders and whether fit or disabled to relate to us for help, guidance and assistance in their problems. Also to ensure that we report back to them after they have made use to our services.

Engaging with Individuals in our communities workshop, 20th November 2009
Some of our Health Trainers received further training on engaging with individuals in our communities from Well London.

Motivational Interviewing Training 9th September 2009
Some of our Health Trainers received further training on Motivational Interviewing from NHS Hounslow.

5 week course on Healthy Cooking & Eating, starting 23rd August 2009
Some of our Health Trainers received further training on healthy cooking & eating from Well London.

Bowel Cancer Awareness, 19th August 2009
Some of our Health Trainers received further training on Bowel Cancer Awareness from Cancer UK.

Stroke Awareness Training 2nd April 2009
Homiara Khan from the Stroke Association came to Hounslow on 2nd April 2009 to Train 11 of our volunteers to operate Stroke Information Desks and Stroke Awareness Stands.
