Changes to Tier 4 Diabetes Healthcare in Hounslow
We have raised concern over the decommissioning of outpatient appointments at West Middlesex University Hospital for Type 2 diabetes patients and providing care instead in the community via GPs & Nurses. I have taken this matter to NHS Hounslow and Hounslow LINk. The PCT are not acting within the guidelines laid down in the London Guide to Diabetes. If you have been discharged from WMUH and are having any problems please contact our Chairman, David Cahill.

Our Chairman was invited to House of Commons on 15th November 2010 to lobby for better diabetes healthcare in nursing homes

As a member of the “Council of People Living with Diabetes”, Our Chair was invited to lobby MPs at the World Diabetes Day reception in the House of Commons. Diabetes UK used this reception to highlight the importance of high quality provision and standards of diabetes care in care homes in England, and launched a new report that complements and highlights the Good practice guidelines as a valuable resource for care homes.

They believe that the Good practice guidelines and report make a positive and constructive contribution to the debate about how to improve standards of care for older people with diabetes in care homes. A large number of MPs and peers attended the event, which was kindly sponsored by Adrian Sanders MP. Our new Chief Executive Baroness Barbara Young and Professor Alan Sinclair highlighted the issues.

Donations of £860 received from Guests at Steve & Angie Curry’s wedding
Guests at Steve and Angie’s wedding were asked to donate to Diabetes UK instead of buying the usual electric toasters and kettles. So £860 was collected. We received £810 and £50 went directly to Diabetes UK via their online receipts system. A big thanks to those guests, and to Steve & Angie for thinking of us

28th April 2010 David Cahill appointed Chairman of WMUH Upbeat Heart Support Group
David Cahill  was appointed Chairman of The WMUH Upbeat Heart (Prevention & Patient Support) Group at their AGM on 28th April 2010. It is a heart patient support group based at West Middlesex University Hospital and affiliated to the British Heart Foundation.

Heart disease is a complication derived from diabetes that also makes it a condition that is very relevant to people with diabetes, and as such we want a strong heart patient support group in Hounslow.

Due to a lack of volunteers that group was considering to disband as a patient support group and continue with only heart awareness activity. Some of our volunteers have been helping the Upbeat Group and are cross members of both groups. Currently Upbeat only runs a Heart Awareness Desk at West Middlesex University Hospital, and has resource to only attend a limited number of road shows. It has not held meetings for its members for over a year. Due to its limited volunteer resource is has been unable undertake many activities and we hope to change this.
