Public Meeting Wednesday 28th May 2008 at Heart of Hounslow Health Centre
Dr Safdar Naqvi Consultant Endocrinologist from Ashford & St Peters Hospital give us a talk on alternative treatments. There is added value in some of these treatments and medicines when taken in conjunction with mainstream medicine. Some are used extensively in other parts of the world, with proven results.
Public Meeting Wednesday 26th March 2008 at Heart of Hounslow Health Centre
This was our Annual General Meeting, which was followed by a Cheese & Wine Party. We presented our Accounts for 2007 together with a report on our activity for the year. We then had a discussion on what we hope to achieve in 2008 and on what members want from the group.

Public meeting Wednesday 30th January 2008 at Heart of Hounslow Health Centre
We showed had a presentation from Professor Ludovic Vallier from Cambridge University who is running a diabetes research project on stem cells. As a Voluntary Group, we donated £1,277 to this project in December 2006, so it was interesting to find out how our project was getting on. Currently there are only enough donated islet cells to treat one per cent of people with diabetes, this study is looking into the possibility of producing islet cells from stem cells. 39 present

We had a
presentation by Dr Iain Frame from Diabetes UK on “Diabetes UK
Research”. He talked about projects currently underway, what exciting
results are likely to come them, and when; and on how Diabetes UK
approves projects for funding.

recognition of Colin’s dedication to our Group and many years service as

Public Meeting Wednesday 26th September 2007 at Heart of Hounslow Health Centre
Dr Safdar Naqvi Consultant Endocrinologist from Ashford St Peters Hospital was our guest speaker. He gave us a talk on Endocrinology and how Endocrinology can help people with diabetes. He explained how different glands operate and how they interact on the body. Sue Jeffers, a director from Hounslow PCT presented to David Cahill a certificate from Diabetes UK to thanking him for his hard work and commitment. Then Sue Jeffers presented a certificate to Ken Riley, on behalf of the group, from Diabetes UK thanking the Group for their hard work and commitment. Both Certificates were signed by Douglas Smallwood Chief Executive of Diabetes UK.
Public Meeting Wednesday 25th July 2007 at Heart of Hounslow Health Centre
Our Chair gave an introduction about our new venue at the new Heart of Hounslow Health Centre. We had a presentation on “Diabetic Care in Hounslow” given by Kaz Pearce, Assistant Director of Hounslow PCT. She included details of the new Diabetes Retinopathy Screening Service that started in September. She also went through the results of The Healthcare Commission Audit on Diabetic Care in Hounslow. She explained the new “(GP) Practice based commissioning” coming into effect. She then explained a new pilot scheme on “Tele” Health that is based on patients sending in blood glucose results using mobile phone technology.
Public Meeting Wednesday 30th May 2007 at Hounslow Conservative Club
We had a talk on Self Care Management by Myra Savin, Partnership Manager, Hounslow PCT. She also presented the Expert Patient Programme. Dietician Rupindar Sahota presented the X-Pert Diabetes Course, Aap Ke Sehat Course, and Weigh to Lose Course. Lifestyle Development Officer David Ollington presented Exercise on Prescription, Lifestyle Management Course & Cardiac Rehab stage IV Course. All were Hounslow PCT staff.

Public Annual General Meeting 28th March 2007 at West Thames College, Isleworth
Our Treasurer Janet Wilson presented the accounts for 2006, which were approved. The appointment of members to the Hounslow voluntary group committee was ratified. David introduces and displayed our new website. The controversial issue of switching statins was discussed (see the item under Patient Power page). We discussed moving our venue to the new Health Centre. We had a presentation from our Chair on the work undertaken by the group in the year.

We received a presentation from Michael Burman, London Region Manager from Diabetes UK on “What does Diabetes UK do?”
